Julie’s Bicycle is a not for profit company established to find ways to reduce the UK music industry’s greenhouse gas emissions. We are working with science and industry to find achievable and effective solutions for the music industry and beyond.
With Reading and Leeds festivals over for another year our intrepid teams of festival surveyors can now rest their clipboards.
This summer Julie’s Bicycle has been carrying out surveys of audience travel to 14 festivals in England, Scotland and Ireland. We have been looking at both current travel behaviour and attitudes to public transport and liftshare schemes. Our First Step report found that audience travel to festivals and music venues was the largest single contributor of greenhouse gas emissions to the UK music industry footprint - 43%. This survey is a direct result of the industry wanting to know more about how it can help reduce this source of emissions.
In addition to Leeds and Reading Festivals, a number of other festivals have participated in this study including: Download, Glastonbury, Hyde Park Calling, T in the Park, Oxegen, Latitude, Global Gathering, Cambridge Folk Festival, and The V Festivals.
The information from the surveys will be analysed by Oxford University’s Environmental Change Institute on behalf of Julie’s Bicycle. The survey was developed with support from Live Nation, Festival Republic and AGreenerFestival.
